Scholarships, Bursaries & Awards

There are a number of Scholarships, Awards and Bursaries available on an annual basis to entering and enrolled students. A full list, including detailed terms for awarding, can be found in the official Faculty of Medicine calendar online on the Registrar’s office website.

Scholarships are awarded based on a students’ demonstrated academic ability. These can be specific to a particular course, subject area, clinical skill or other pre-defined categories.
Awards are also performance based and as well based on specific criteria as outlined in the terms. These criteria could be performance in a particular subject area, be based on residency and/or require students to submit documentation as well.

Bursaries are mostly awarded solely on financial need. These are awarded via the Finance office and the Financial Aid committee. This committee also is responsible for the distribution of the annual financial need bursaries. There are a small number that of bursaries that are awarded within the scholarships and awards program of Student affairs. The terms of these are based on both financial need and satisfactory academic standing.

Recipients are determined by the Scholarships and Awards Committee of the Faculty of Medicine. The committee meets to review results and submissions and approves recommendations 2-3 times per academic year.

Students make application for “specific” awards / bursaries/ scholarships using the Medix Application, normally in early September of each year.

Notification and disbursements of awards are made in mid October and all recipients are required to submit a letter of thanks to the donor prior to receiving the award.
There are 3 separate occasions in which Scholarships and Awards are determined in any given academic year. These are:

  1. Entrance – all entering students are automatically considered for scholarships and Awards upon acceptance into the Faculty of Medicine.
  2. In Course – Enrolled students can apply and be considered for scholarships, Awards and Bursaries at the completion of each academic year.
  3. Convocation – All graduating students are considered for Scholarships & Awards.

Note: All students are automatically considered for Scholarships available in each year under the “IMPLIED CONSENT” rule. Should a student wish to not release their grades for consideration, they must OPT out using the application available on Medix.
